While working towards his degree in Horticulture from NC State, John Spivey started his business by providing installation and maintenance services to homeowners around Raleigh. In 1981, he incorporated Gardens of the Carolinas with the goal to separate himself from the competition with sound horticultural practices and a thorough knowledge of construction techniques.​ 

Over the course of the last four decades, John has grown his business as a design-build landscape contractor, offering turn-key design and construction solutions throughout the greater Triangle area.​ In 2019, John's niece, Samantha, joined the team. With a degree in Civil Engineering, Samantha brought a new field of expertise to company operations.
